Action potential restitution and hysteresis in a reaction-diffusion system with pacing rate dependent excitation threshold

چکیده
We have demonstrated that rate dependent restitution and action potential duration-refractory period hysteresis can be reproduced in a one-dimensional two-variable Chernyak-Starobin-Cohen reaction-diffusion medium with variable excitation threshold. We show that restitution and hysteresis depend on the relationship between pacing period and steady state excitation threshold and also on the rate of excitation threshold adaptation after an abrupt change in pacing period. It was also observed that the onset of action potential duration alternans is determined by the minimal stable wavefront speed, which could be approximated by the analytical critical speed of a stable solitary pulse. This approximation was suitably accurate regardless of the adaptation constant of excitation threshold, its dependence on pacing interval, or magnitude of the slopes of restitution curves. ∗Electronic address: [email protected]

Mechanism of Discordant Alternans in Spatially Homogeneous Tissue
abstract Discordant alternans, the phenomenon of separate cardiac tissue locations exhibiting action potential duration (APD) alternans of opposite phase, appears to be a potential mechanism for electrocardiographic T wave alternans, but its initiation mechanism is unknown. We studied behavior of one-and two-dimensional cardiac tissue spatially homogeneous in all respects, including APD restitu...

BACKGROUND Duration and speed of propagation of the pulse are essential factors for stability of excitation waves. We explore the propagation of excitation waves resulting from periodic stimulation of an excitable cable to determine the minimal stable pulse duration in a rate-dependent modification of a Chernyak-Starobin-Cohen reaction-diffusion model. RESULTS Various pacing rate dependent fe...

Cell coupling is considered to be important for cardiac action potential propagation and arrhythmogenesis. We carried out computer simulations to investigate the effects of stimulation strength and cell-to-cell coupling on action potential duration (APD) restitution, APD alternans, and stability of reentry in models of isolated cell, one-dimensional cable, and two-dimensional tissue. Phase I fo...
متن کاملSpatial heterogeneity of the restitution portrait in rabbit epicardium.
Spatial heterogeneity of repolarization can provide a substrate for reentry to occur in myocardium. This heterogeneity may result from spatial differences in action potential duration (APD) restitution. The restitution portrait (RP) measures many aspects of rate-dependent restitution: the dynamic restitution curve (RC), S1-S2 RC, and short-term memory response. We used the RP to characterize ep...
متن کاملShort-term action potential memory and electrical restitution: A cellular computational study on the stability of cardiac repolarization under dynamic pacing
Electrical restitution (ER) is a major determinant of repolarization stability and, under fast pacing rate, it reveals memory properties of the cardiac action potential (AP), whose dynamics have never been fully elucidated, nor their ionic mechanisms. Previous studies have looked at ER mainly in terms of changes in AP duration (APD) when the preceding diastolic interval (DI) changes and describ...
